Case Study | Worktastic
My Role:
UX Designer / Researcher
Context:
My team collaborated with a Workday mentor to devise a virtual solution for LGBT+ employees aimed at fostering stronger connections among employees amidst the challenges of remote work.
Outcome:
We developed Worktastic, an innovative recreational app designed to facilitate connection among employees. This is done through specified prompts and tags, users can create new relationships, initiate conversations and engage with each other, fostering meaningful interactions within an online workplace.
Initial research:
Via the Workday Slack, we issued a survey invitation specifically individuals identifying as LGBT+ to gather insights into how remote work has impacted their experiences. Our survey focused on understanding the intersection of their identity and work environment, revealing a preference for remote work while highlighting challenges in building lasting relationships with coworkers compared to previous job experiences.
Interviews
Following the survey, we conducted one-on-one interviews with Workday employees to delve deeper into their responses, gaining valuable insights into the reasons behind their answers. These discussions allowed us to explore potential solutions that employees believed would be beneficial in addressing the challenges identified.
Our lovely mentor Andrea helping us focus our survey questions
"Remote work is convenient, but I don’t really talk to any of my coworkers out of work, I wouldn’t really know what to say [laughter]”
Key Takeaways:
Majority of employees enjoy remote or hybrid work
Those who have worked > 1 years have a harder time creating relationships with coworkers
70% of participants don’t know where to find other LGBT+ members at work
The idea of not knowing how to steer the conversation from work, or being trapped in “work only conversations” was mentioned by 9/17 people interviewed
Problem:
How can we make it easier for coworkers to get to know each other and build relationships?
Ideating:
Solution:
We created a playful recreational app designed for Workday employees, where users can input tags and be randomly matched with another colleague for spontaneous chats. During these interactions, users will encounter randomly generated prompts on the screen, adding an element of fun and creativity to their conversations.
